Reaching out in love and service

Mothers' Union is an international Christian membership charity with over 4 million members in 84 countries throughout the world. We aim to demonstrate the Christian faith in action through the transformation of communities worldwide. We are the largest lay-led Christian organisation in the world, called “the best-kept secret in the Church of England” by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

We are working with people of all faiths and none to promote stable marriage, family life and the protection of children through praying, enabling and campaigning

 Our aims and objectives are:

  •  To promote and support married life
  •  To encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children
  •  To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service
  •  To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children
  •  To help those whose family life has met with adversity

 Our vision

Our vision is of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships. This is not a vague hope, but a goal we actively pursue by praying, campaigning and enabling.

Our values

Mothers’ Union is a Christian mission organisation working with people of all faiths and none. Mothers’ Union is firmly rooted in a voluntary ethos centred on mutual respect and collaboration. Our governance, leadership and programmes are undertaken and driven by members within their own communities worldwide.

The Mothers' Union Prayer

Loving Lord
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus' name.

Amen.

As a young woman, our founder Mary Sumner took a special interest in women and their families. When she started meeting with mothers of her parish in 1876, Mary wrote the first Mothers' Union prayer. Her words are still an inspiration for us today.

 The Mary Sumner Prayer

All this day, O Lord,
let me touch as many lives as possible for thee;
and every life I touch, do thou by thy spirit quicken,
whether through the word I speak,
the prayer I breathe,
or the life I live.
Amen.

Activities

Each year, we hold two Coffee Mornings in the Spring and Winter, raising funds for vital MU work at home and abroad. In addition, we hold a Social evening in the Summer, a Carol Service in December, and join in other diocesan events such as Quiet Days and services in Exeter Cathedral. On the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, from 2.30 to 4.00pm, we hold a “Knit-and-Natter” group at Chudleigh Parish Church, when everyone is welcome to come and knit, crochet, sew, and natter – or just come and natter!

Chudleigh Mothers’ Union Branch is part of the Teignbridge Cluster of Branches, with Bovey Tracey, Kingsteignton and Kingskerswell. The diocesan structure is in the process of being changed, with Branches being grouped into Clusters instead of Deaneries, so in the future, there will be quarterly Cluster events and other activities in which we will take part.
